Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed last weeks class assembly on the Rainforest. I know the children really enjoyed putting it all together and worked so hard on it. They created both the dance and the music by themselves with only a little direction to get the two to match. The whole class researched good questions to use in the quiz then the quiz masters chose the final ones and typed them up into the PowerPoint presentation you saw. Finally the drama characters learned all their lines in just a few short days! Im sure you all agree they all did a fantastic job!
Anyway onto this, our final few weeks of this school year! Our IPC work on the Rainforest continues and we will have lots more for you to see, hear and taste in this summers exhibition (please bring some money along though as we are raising money for the rainforest at the same time!).
Literacy
Our main areas this term in literacy are stories that raise issues or dilemmas, persuasive writing and adverts. All these link very nicely to the Rainforest topic and so many of them will be along that theme and again you will see examples in the summer exhibition.
Spellings will also start up again this week and the test will now be on a Friday. Please encourage you child to work hard on these and to be secure enough to use them in their everyday work too.
Numeracy
This half term we will be returning to many of the different areas already covered to ensure the children are secure in the concepts before taking them a step further. Therefore we will be looking at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division once again as well as data handling, measurement and problem solving. In our work on the four main calculations, we will be revisiting written methods, refining them where necessary and practising the different methods for different calculations.
I.P.C.
This Rainforest topic we are currently on is a long one so we are running it through to the end of the year.
Last term, we completed the geography, art, music and P.E. sections of the topic
In geography we were:
Finding out where rainforests are in the world
Finding out which rainforest products we use in our everyday lives
Comparing the ways in which the rainforest people live with our own lives
Finding out how and why the rainforest is being destroyed
Discovering the ways that people are trying to save the rainforest
In art we were:
Making face paint designs
Looking at artwork made by rainforest people and others to help us create our own piece of rainforest art
In music we were:
Listening to music made by rainforest people and others
Composing our own rainforest music
In P.E. we were:
Planning and performing our own rainforest dances
This half term we are moving on to the science and technology and we will be completing the work started on I.C.T. and the International section.
In science, we are:
Finding out about different rainforest animals and plants
Investigating where different animals and plants live in the rainforest
Playing a game to find out which colours are the most difficult to find
Finding out why plants have leaves
Finding out why different plants have different leaves
Finding out the best conditions to grow a plant
Finding out about rainforest fruits and seeds
Growing our own plants from seeds
In technology, we will be:
Designing a recipe for and then making our own fruit drinks
In I.C.T. we are:
Using the Internet to support our research
Using ICT to organise and present our work
In international, we are:
Finding out about how our host and home countries help to protect the rainforests
And Finally
« Our school swimming sessions have now started with ours being on a Monday and a Thursday. Please ensure all children have a swimming hat in their kit. My appeal for help still continues. I still need one person for each day so if anyone is already CRB checked and can cover even an occasional session, I would be most grateful.
« Mrs Cumberpatch is still covering my PPA on a Thursday afternoon and will be doing R.E. and P.E. with the children.
« Just a reminder that the children should all have a pair of trainers in school now for outdoor PE sessions. This half-term the children will be going over the field as much as possible for games and athletic activities.
Yours faithfully,
Miss E Bowers
