PSHE

Intent

At Harpole Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to support the holistic development of every child through the carefully structured Jigsaw Programme. We believe that nurturing children’s personal, social, and emotional growth is essential not only for enhancing their capacity to learn across the curriculum but also for improving their life chances.

The Jigsaw Programme provides a child-centered, developmentally appropriate approach that addresses key areas of learning by:

  • Enhancing social skills to foster collaborative learning and positive relationships.
  • Preparing pupils emotionally and mentally for effective learning.
  • Engaging children’s curiosity and readiness to explore new concepts.
  • Delivering meaningful, practical learning experiences
  • Encouraging reflection to support ongoing personal development.

Our PSHE curriculum aligns with the principles and expectations set out by the National Curriculum and statutory guidance, ensuring that pupils build essential knowledge and skills around personal safety, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and financial awareness.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE supports children’s personal, social, and emotional development, physical growth, and understanding of the world, tailored to their individual learning needs and developmental stages. Through positive relationships and enabling environments, we empower children to become confident, resilient, and independent learners.

Overall, our PSHE curriculum at Harpole is thoughtfully designed to equip pupils with the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to make safe, informed, and responsible choices throughout their lives.

Implementation

At Harpole Primary School, we deliver the Jigsaw PSHE programme through a well-structured, progressive curriculum that supports pupils’ personal, social, health, and emotional development. Lessons are delivered regularly using Jigsaw’s detailed plans, combining whole-class teaching, group work, practical activities, and reflection to engage all learners.

The programme encourages a safe and supportive environment where children’s interests guide enquiry, making learning relevant and meaningful. In Early Years, Jigsaw aligns closely with the EYFS framework to support key developmental areas.

Assessment is ongoing, with teachers using observations, discussions, and pupil feedback to monitor progress and adapt teaching. Pupil voice is valued to improve the curriculum continually.

Our Science and PSHE coordinators oversee the quality of delivery, supported by staff training to ensure confidence in teaching PSHE.

Overall, Jigsaw at Harpole provides a coherent, inclusive PSHE education that equips pupils with vital skills and knowledge for life.

Impact

The implementation of the Jigsaw PSHE programme at Harpole Primary ensures that pupils develop essential personal, social, and emotional skills that support their overall well-being and academic progress. Through regular, engaging lessons, children gain confidence, resilience, and the ability to make informed, responsible decisions.

Pupils demonstrate improved social skills, emotional literacy, and an increased awareness of health and wellbeing, enabling them to build positive relationships and manage challenges effectively. Assessment and pupil voice feedback show growing engagement and understanding of key PSHE themes, including mental health, safety, and citizenship.

As a result, pupils leave Harpole equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to thrive both in school and beyond, meeting the aims of the national curriculum and contributing positively to their communities.
